Pearl in the Shell is a sexy R&B tune. The central idea is that of wanting to possess someone and control them and mistaking that for love. Recorded in a desanctified church in Northern Italy, it features an R&B guitar riff, a funky bassline and a muscle shoals inspired beat, along with soulful lyrics.

The song also addresses the theme of the painting Bittersweet Island, being safe but in a state of limbo. Your treasures being lost beneath the cold waves and your potential arrested by circumstances, seems to have been a large theme in the life of Klee.
